The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is going to introduce a new approach in water resources management strategies of Turkey. Being a EU candidate, Turkey is currently working hard on adapting the national regulations with EU standards in order to achieve a full implementation of WFD at country scale.

With the constitution of national water management policies and validation of new regulations for water, WFD will yield effective planning of resources with integrated management and allocation principles. During WFD implementation stage however, Turkey will need extensive assistance both from national and international experienced consulting groups for engineering studies aiming at:

• basin characterization

• diagnosing the important impacts of human activity

• identification and mapping of preservation areas

• development of monitoring network

• preparation of environmental objectives lists

• cost analyses

• development of action policies
