Giresun
Port
Being a major port in Black Sea Region, Giresun Port is in service since 1959.
It is protected with a rubble mound breakwater and
has 5 quays; for general cargo, for passenger ships, for tugboats,
for fishermen and for bulk cargo. With its approximate annual loading capacity
of 1,800,000
tons, it has an important role in economy of the
region.
Ministry of
Transportation initiated a project in 1996 to increase the port capacity to 3,000,000 tons per year
by constructing a new container quay inside the basin.
However, building
a new quay was not a straightforward task as it was requiring major
changes on the internal layout. Prior to final design stage,
Ministry of Transportation
assigned ARTI Proje
the engineering studies to develop the
optimum new layout of the quays. We carried
out detailed wave agitation model tests to
investigate the effects of different layout alternatives. The tests
revealed that building a new container berth will enhance the wave
disturbance inside the basin and extension of the existing breakwater
will be necessary to cope with the problem. The optimum extension
length and angle was again determined by model tests.
