Cyprus Water Project
The
engineering studies for the pipeline
to
carry water from mainland
Turkey to Northern Cyprus
have
commenced recently following the signing of
the contract between Administration of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) and
the giant Turkish contractor Alsim ALARKO.
The pipeline will be located at the narrowest section of the strait
formed by Turkey and the island and will provide water at a rate of 75
million m³ per year (2.38 m³/s).
The pipeline will be a submerged floating structure and the subsea
section of the pipeline will consist of 1.6 m diameter HDPE (High
Density Polyethylene) pipe approximately 78 km long. In the shore
approaching sections of the route, the pipeline will be either resting
on the seabed or be trenched and backfilled below seabed level.
Between the 250 m depth contours on both the Turkish and Cyprus sides,
the pipeline will be suspended at a water depth of minimum 250 m. The
pipeline will be spanning from vertical tethers anchored to the sea
bed in spans of approximately 400 - 500 meters length each.
As
ARTI Proje,
we
will be undertaking
several engineering studies in the project.
We will be
conduction
2D
and
3D numerical model studies in cooperation with Danish
Hydraulic
Institute
for Water and Environment. Extensive
phyical
model
tests
to investigate the behavior of the suspended pipeline under
static and dynamic loadings will
also be carried out at the DHI
laboratories in Denmark.
Under an additional contract, the
hydrographic design basis for the pipeline will be provided by ARTI Proje-DHI
collaboration. ARTI will
also
collaborate
with Neptune Oceanographics Ltd., Aquatec Group Ltd. and
Trevor Jee Associates
of UK
to develop an underwater communication and
surveillance system for the pipeline.
Our participation in the project is not limited with technical
subjects of above but we also take role in the project
coordination.
We
will
provide technical and managerial
assistance
to
Alsim ALARKO' s project management team.
